Viva CalleSJ - A Community Celebration
Introduction to Viva CalleSJ
Viva CalleSJ (pronounced Vee-Va Ka-Ye SJ) is a free recreational program that closes miles of scenic San José streets. Come see what it’s like at our next event!
Viva CalleSJ’s route will take participants through some of San José’s most eclectic and historic neighborhoods. The open street events brings people and communities together to walk, bike, skate, play and explore the explore the city like never before! It is not a race, so you can start anywhere and have as much fun as you want, in either direction.
You Are the Key to Viva CalleSJ
Viva CalleSJ is a free event, open to the en tire community. We find sponsors to cover the costs and the City of San Jose provides the important infrastructure and covers the essential cost. We could use your support, too! Community donations will help us sustain Viva CalleSJ and deliver the important message that this event belongs to the community. Donate whatever you can. Every dollar makes a difference.
Worldwide Open Streets Movement
Viva CalleSJ is inspired by similar Open Streets programs hosted in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Portland; Guadalajara, Mexico; and other cities around the world. The name combines the Spanish “Viva Calles,” which can mean both “the streets live” and “long live the streets.” Viva CalleSJ is managed by the City of San José’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services, with outreach and engagement support provided by Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. Viva CalleSJ has been generously supported by Knight Foundation, which believes that democracy thrives when people and communities are informed and engaged.
